Information

The annual Belvoir Challenge was set up in 1990 to raise money for Harby Primary School. The event is organised by the 'Friends of Harby School' and the Vale Striders running club.

Routes -The routes (26 and 15 miles) follow footpaths, byways, tracks, and minor roads, and with the kind permission of the Duke of Rutland, go through the Belvoir Estate. Both routes start and finish at Harby School (grid ref SK746312) and are clearly way-marked with coloured tape. There are checkpoints roughly every 5 miles providing free drinks and snacks. (The Belvoir Challenge is well known for the homemade cakes provided, and is one of the few events where you can actually put on weight!) Entrants can retire at checkpoints where transport is available back to the school.

Ordnance Survey maps covering the area are:
1:50000 (Landranger) - 129 and 130
1:25000 (Explorer) - 246, 247 and 260
1:25000 (Pathfinder) - SK62/72, 63/73, 82/92 and 83/93

Registration - Registration for the both routes is at the village hall in Harby, at the corner of Main Street and School Lane (opposite the garage). The registration desks will be open from 7am and closes at 8.45 - it gets quite busy so try to arrive early and please allow at least 30 minutes before the start. On registering you will be given a card with your number on, which will need to be shown at each checkpoint as you go round the route.

Start and Finish - Both events start and finish at Harby School. There is a mass start at 9am from the school, and a 10 hour time limit for completing the event. You are advised to bring a torch if you are likely to finish in the dark. A hot meal of soup and pudding is provided for all entrants at the finish.

Fees - The fees for the 2008 challenge are £12 for both routes, with children 14yrs and under half-price. The fee includes refreshments en-route, rescue from checkpoints, a hot meal at the finish and certificates to all who complete the event.

All money raised goes to Harby Primary School. Thank you for your support.

Other points:

  • All entrants under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Strictly NO dogs - at landowners request.
  • Parking in the village is limited - Marshals and signboards will direct cars to parking areas, but please park with consideration for the local residents.
  • Changing facilities are limited, and there are no showers.
  • Take particular care for your own safety at road crossings. There will be advance warning notices of these, and marshals at certain points, but please note that marshals are there to warn you of traffic, they are not allowed to stop traffic.
  • The event is never cancelled - we go whatever the weather!
