Information
The annual Belvoir Challenge was set up in 1990 to raise
money for Harby Primary School. The event is organised by the 'Friends
of Harby School'.
Routes -The routes (26 and 15 miles) follow footpaths, byways,
tracks, and minor roads, and with the kind permission of the Duke of Rutland,
goes through the Belvoir Estate. Both routes start and finish at Harby
School (grid ref SK746312) and are clearly way-marked with coloured tape.
There are checkpoints roughly every 5 miles providing free drinks and
snacks. (The Belvoir Challenge is well known for the homemade cakes provided,
and is one of the few events where you can actually put on weight!) Entrants
can retire at checkpoints where transport is available back to the school.
Ordnance Survey maps covering the area are:
1:50000 (Landranger) - 129 and 130
1:25000 (Explorer) - 246, 247 and 260
1:25000 (Pathfinder) - SK62/72, 63/73, 82/92 and 83/93
Entry - Entries can be made by sending in the entry form found
on the Entry Form Page
Please note: NUMBERS OF ENTRIES ARE RESTRICTED, THE 2010 EVENT
WAS OVERSUBSCRIBED and a large number were unfortunate not to receive
a place. The 2011 event was full 8 weeks before the event!!
Registration - Registration for the both routes is at the village
hall in Harby, at the corner of Main Street and School Lane (opposite
the garage). The registration desks will be open from 7am and close at
8.45 - it gets quite busy so try to arrive early and please allow at least
30 minutes before the start. On registering you will be given a card with
your number on, which will need to be shown at each checkpoint as you
go round the route.
Start and Finish - Both events start at Harby School and finish
at Harby Village Hall. There is a mass start at 9am from the school, and
a 10 hour time limit for completing the event. You are advised to bring
a torch if you are likely to finish in the dark. A hot meal of soup and
pudding is provided for all entrants who finish up to 7pm.
Fees - The fees for the 2011 challenge are £15 for both routes,
with children 14yrs and under £8. The fee includes refreshments
en-route, rescue from checkpoints, a hot meal at the finish and certificates
to all who complete the event.
All money raised goes to Harby Primary School. Thank you for your support.
Other points:
* All entrants under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
* Strictly NO dogs - at landowners request.
* Parking in the village is limited - Marshals and signboards will direct
cars to parking areas, but
please park with consideration for the local residents. If you can car
share with other entrants it would be very helpful.
* Changing facilities are limited, and there are no showers.
* Take particular care for your own safety at road crossings. There will
be advance warning notices of these, and marshals at certain points, but
please note that marshals are there to warn you of traffic, they are not
allowed to stop traffic.
* Entrants take part in the event at their own risk and will not be able
to hold the organisers responsible for any illness or injury as a result
of the event.
* All entrants agree to abide by the rules of the event.
* All entrants should be fit enough to take part and have no medical conditions
that could endanger themselves or others. The organisers reserve the right
to refuse entry to anyone they feel cannot participate safely.
* The routes are over various terrains including rough, muddy or slippery
ground (and include stiles, cattle grids etc.) and participants should
be aware of the potential risk of injury.
* Unfortunately we do not feel that the event is suitable for disabled
persons with significant disabilities. However we will try to accommodate
requests for assistance depending on the individual circumstances.
